I fear what may have happened, in fact probably has happened, is that the roots of both rows of beans found their way into the trench. If they were both on the same frame they must have been close enough to each other to do this. To really get a comparison you’ll have to grow them in separate beds. But that would probably mess up your rotation. What do you think?

I followed your advice and did both ways with the runner beans, one side they were grown with a trench and the other side no trench. It made no difference what so ever, both sides of my bean frame looked exactly the same, full of beans. It took much longer to get them growing and fruiting this year, but I put that down to cold spring and they suffered with the winds. I’m afraid that I didn’t weigh them so don’t know exact yields but we were picking and freezing the same amounts as previous years i’m sure 🙂
